DAMEN SEA AXE DESIGN

Since the eighties, Damen and Delft University of Technology have cooperated in a research programme aimed at improving the seakeeping characteristics of high-speed vessels. In the nineties, this cooperation produced the “Enlarged Ship Concept” on which the highly successful Stan Patrol 4207 and 4708 are based. In the beginning of the 21stcentury the “Axe Bow Concept” was developed, a hull shape with unparallelled seakeeping characteristics. Based on this concept, Damen has developed the “Sea Axe” Patrol Vessels and Fast Crew Suppliers.

Research to improve seakeeping behaviour

Since the eighties, Damen and Delft University of Technology have cooperated in a research programme aimed at improving the seakeeping characteristics of high-speed vessels. Our research asked how it was possible to build a ship that can maintain high speeds in strong winds and heavy seas. For decades this had been a dream of builders of patrol and supply vessels. We found the answer when in the nineties, the innovative Enlarged Ship Concept - on which the highly successful Stan Patrol 4207 and 4708 are based - became a reality.
The Axe Bow Concept

The Enlarged Ship Concept was the starting point for more innovative solutions. The design philosophy behind the Enlarged Ship Concept was taken even further with the introduction of the Axe Bow Concept. This concept was developed in the beginning of the 21st century together with Delft University of Technology, MARIN and the US Coastguard. The revolutionary hull shape has unparallelled seakeeping characteristics.
Sea Axe also cuts fuel usage cut by 20%

Based on the Axe Bow Concept, Damen has developed the Sea Axe Patrol Vessels and Fast Crew Suppliers. We hold an exclusive license on the patent. The Sea Axe concept is also proving itself when it comes to sustainability because of the dramatic reduction in wave resistance. This unique innovation was developed for high-speed vessels initially to improve operability and for the comfort and safety of the crew. Fuel usage is cut by 20% because of the optimisation of the hull form in real operating conditions. Sea Axe vessels have superior motion behaviour, much lower resistance, improved fuel consumption and consequently, lower emissions.
