Damen Engineering and Research are constantly improving our ferry designs, meaning: less weight and/or lower manufacturing costs, etc.
In this search we think that we have reached the limits of the class rules, therefore it is required to think out of the box to find lighter and better solutions.
For example:
* Which part (section or items) of the ferries has the largest contribution to the weight and can easily be optimized?
* Is it possible with direct calculations to further optimize the design of our ferries?
* Can we further optimize the design in the preliminary design stage with fast and easy design tools?
Doel
Optimize the weight and/or the production friendliness of the design of the Damen Fast Ferry (DFF) 4212.
Boundaries
- For this thesis the design of the DFF 4212 can be used as reference. From this ship the weights, lines plan and strength analysis are available.
- The hull shape of the DFF 4212 should be used for the optimization. The location of the engines and the superstructure are free to modify.
- Preferably the tools should be made in matlab
- Direct calculations procedures should be made and/or used for the design of the ship.
