'Think global, act local' is one of the advantageous concepts of contemporary entrepreneurship. Imagine the day when a complete ship is delivered to your yard in kit form, with all the necessary components and materials properly stowed in dark-blue containers, ready to be constructed on site. Then you will truly be utilising international resources to enhance your local achievements. The Damen Technical Cooperation department can help you put this concept into practice.
Advantageous concept
Damen Technical Cooperation enables you to build your DAMEN vessel locally, anywhere in the world, from a prefabricated shipbuilding kit in combination with assistance, training and backup from Damen Shipyards Gorinchem. By using standardised components it is possible to make a custom-built design fulfilling the specific local requirements. This cost-friendly concept can be applied to a full range of vessels for a wide variety of marine operations.
Delivery times are short in comparison to traditional shipbuilding. All vessels are supplied with well-documented and comprehensive material packages to optimise your working methods. You have experienced DAMEN engineers at your disposal for the duration of the project.
Value-adding resources
DAMEN quality standards are embedded in all the resources made available for you. The following advantages enhance your competitiveness:
- Transfer of shipbuilding know-how
- Worldwide proven designs within an extensive product range
- Design flexibility to meet your specific demands
- Assigned Project Manager for efficient processes
- Engineers on demand, for professional assistance on any level
- Smooth logistics due to extensive preparation resulting in hitch-free production
- Complete drawing sets, in conformity with latest regulations
- Guaranteed technical and operational performance of vessels
- Reduced transportation costs compared to complete vessels and foreign exchange payments
- Overall technical support from Damen Shipyards Gorinchem (The Netherlands)
Collaborative project approach
Having a prefab vessel prepared and delivered to you doesn't mean you have to do all the construction work single-handedly. Support from Damen Technical Cooperation is continuously at your disposal.
Our collaborative project approach is expressed in the assignment of a dedicated Project Manager. He will visit your shipyard early on to check the local conditions and arrangements, such as your crane capacity: aspects that may have implications for the drawings. He will also serve as your contact person, and his tasks include communication with the classification society and relevant governmental bodies.
The Project Manager controls and monitors the internal processes of the various DAMEN departments. The Project Manager is involved in the project from the moment the contract takes effect until you put the vessel into service.
Smart material flow
At Damen Shipyards Gorinchem the organisation of material flow, from parts inventory to material distribution, is highly automated. All components and building materials can be traced easily until unpacking and installation on board.
A large stock of standardised components enables Damen Technical Cooperation to deliver material packages within the shortest possible time. Engines, gearboxes and other non-stock items are purchased on a contract basis and are subject to timed delivery.
All items are packed in containers that remain the property of the building yard. Container packing lists are prepared and delivered for the logistical material flow at the building yard. A job book is made simultaneously, specifying the required quantity of material and components for each system. This user-friendly job book enables your yard's supervisors to select, collect and prepare the system components to be installed on board. The sequence of unpacking the containers follows your production method.
Cooperation diversity
The degree of involvement of Damen Technical Cooperation is geared towards your preferences. It varies from the supply of a component or a set of drawings, to the delivery of a complete and carefully documented prefab shipbuilding kit. All necessary services can be made available during construction.
Some typical examples of technical cooperation are listed below:
License agreements enabling shipyards to use DAMEN designs
Technical assistance, up to management level if required
Preparation of feasibility studies
Complete shipbuilding kits, including working drawings and calculations to enable the yard to construct the vessel
Partial shipbuilding kits, containing equipment and parts
Manuals and documents in accordance with end users' requirements
Consultancy and engineering work for development or improvement of shipbuilding and/or ship repair activities
On-site training and assistance of management and the labour force
Support and knowledge transfer
During the building process, the transfer of knowledge provides added value for local economies and will improve your building yard's competitiveness in the market. By using DAMEN designs and kits you have access to support from the entire DAMEN organisation.
For example, Damen's Purchasing Department, which operates globally, can help reduce your purchase prices. Furthermore, the possibility of bidding for tenders without advance investment (as DAMEN provides all necessary technical information) is available for you. Last but not least, you can take advantage of services such as: spare parts delivery, shipping and forwarding, after-sales service, research, product development and customer finance.
Proven reliability
Since the implementation of the Damen Technical Cooperation concept in 1976, over 725 vessels have been built locally in more than 60 countries all over the world. At present, a custom built, prefab ship based on proven performance, reliability and durability is being put into service in short-term. If our concept suits you, please feel free to contact us. |
